Revenue announces plans for paperless self assessment

28 Nov 2013

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has announced plans to introduce ‘paperless’ self assessment (SA) tax returns.

Under the system, HMRC would communicate with customers electronically rather than by letter.

However, introducing the new service will require changes to existing tax law, and HMRC has launched a consultation on the proposals. The deadline for responses is 27 December 2013.

The plans form part of HMRC’s Digital Strategy, which includes upgrading the existing SA Online service.

Commenting on the plans, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, David Gauke, said, ‘HMRC’s Digital Strategy will make processes like SA faster and simpler. It will deliver the tax system for the 21st century that taxpayers expect’.
